I would have liked to had a bit more time with hanshi taylor at the camp.
But Sempai brad you , winnie and sensai luke would be the best fighter i've trained with not to mention a few other sensai's. As a lower kyu grade i dont expect much and to me it is a great privilage to train with you all..OSU.

My instructor is very good at helping with this sort of test.

We have done a lot of this type of training, so even the 10th kyus have done this before. Of course the higher kyu grades are expected to know more than the lower.

Tips he gave us.

1 Nearly every technique we do can have multiple applications - so, a strike can be a block, and a block can often be a break out as well. So if you think about it, nearly every technique has 3 bunkai without having to think too hard.

2 Think about what happens with each technique to the other person, eg when i strike to a face, does the opponent fall forward or back? do they get closer or further away? How does that effect the bunkai of the next technique?

3 The opponent does not always have to be in front of you ie they might not be exactly in front of the way you are facing, they could be in front or behind or to the side. For example in Takiokyu Ich, instead of saying "I am blocking a kick from a new opponent to my left" for the bunkai of move 5, what if the opponent from move 4 had grabbed your hand after your punch, couldn't the Gedan barai in move 5 then be a break out? (just an example, not a oggd one maybe )
I have been doing a lot of trainig at Sempai Rod's "Fight Factory" on a Friday night, frankly i think that ha been best for me.
If you want to get better at painting pictures, then paint a lot.

If you want to get better stamina in kumite, then do a lot of kumite
This will be my 4th one and im tipping it will be somewhat different to my first 3... it is exactly 2 weeks out from my shodan grading... so i will be the nerd going to bed at 9:30pm and drinking soda water instead of the 400 beers i usually have hehe

i am looking forward to waking up at 5:30 ready for beach training without feeling like i have left several vital organs back at the Tullabudgera SLSC the night before..

Topic Replies: 1

What cross training helps your kumite?

everyone is different and one thing that works for one person might not work for another...

ive found cycling really helps my leg strength, both in dishing out the kicks and reiceiving them.... In the vics i wore more leg kicks than i thought possible and came out of the fights happy that i could wear so many and stay standing... so cycling gets the thumbs up from me...

I have never been a good runner, i find it labouress and uncomfortable and can never find a happy medium between the lungs giving out and the legs getting painfully tight... i can start at a pace of about 4mins 30secs per KM then i drop down to over 5mins after about 2k's.... if i take it easy i feel fit enough to run for ages but the calve muscles get extremely tight and its hard to keep the legs ticking over..... if i sprint the legs feel fine, but the lungs give out after about 500metres... i envy the guys that can tick along for 20km at a decent pace... i hate running.... but i hate man boobs even more... so there isnt much choice

Over the summer period i decided some triathlons would be a good cross training interest so entered some short mini tri's and had a ball... however i knew my major let down (running coming a close second) would be the swim, so i worked hard on improving from barely being able to swim 50m without being out of breath to a steady 300m... i found this has improved my lung capacity massively...

all of this helps my kumite, the stamina, the strength and the ability to stay upright when every muscle in my body is screaming for me to hit the deck and have a lie down....

so what helps you?...

i know bag work, sparring, basics all do... but what about outside of karate specific training?
Ok, undoubtly we have all had to go through kata, be it in a group or at times solo in front of everyone...

But what i want to know is, when your put on the spot and asked 'run everyone through a kata of your choice and explain both the techniques AND the bunkai', could you do it? what kata would you choose?

its a lot harder than you think...

of course all the yudansha have, or will have very shortly had to perform this task, im interested in the coloured belts answers and experiences..

if you've done it, how did you go?

if you have had someone do it in your class how do you think they went?
